Lincoln City Foundation is using the power of football to create healthier, happier and more connected communities across Lincolnshire.
For many people, football is about far more than what happens on the pitch. It can be a source of identity, confidence, friendship and belonging. Lincoln City Foundation has spent more than three decades harnessing that power, using the reach of Lincoln City Football Club to tackle health inequalities, reduce social isolation and create opportunities for people of all ages.
As the charitable arm of Lincoln City FC, the Foundation works with individuals from the age of three through to their nineties, delivering programmes that support physical health, mental wellbeing, education, employability and community cohesion. During 2024/25 alone, the organisation engaged more than 9,100 participants through 23 projects delivered across the county.
At its heart is a simple but powerful vision: to create happier, healthier and more inspired communities throughout Lincolnshire.
More than a football charity
Lincoln City Foundation began life in 1994 as Lincoln City Football in the Community before becoming an independent charity in 2009. The move enabled the organisation to expand its reach and respond more effectively to the evolving needs of local communities.
While football remains an important part of its identity, the Foundation is keen to challenge assumptions about what it does.
People are often surprised to learn that football is only one part of the picture. For many participants, the club badge and trusted reputation of Lincoln City FC provide the first connection. What follows is access to a much wider network of support, opportunities and community-focused programmes designed to improve lives.
Its work is guided by values including commitment, trust, teamwork, inspiration and inclusivity, ensuring that services remain accessible and responsive to the people who need them most.
Creating opportunities to thrive
The Foundation’s approach combines the trusted brand of Lincoln City Football Club with experienced delivery staff and strong partnerships across health, education and the voluntary sector.
Programmes are designed around the needs of local communities, creating welcoming spaces where people can become more physically active, improve their wellbeing, develop new skills and build meaningful relationships.
Support takes many forms. For some people it may be participating in physical activity sessions. For others it could mean accessing wellbeing support, volunteering opportunities, educational programmes or community events.
Whatever the route in, the aim remains the same: to help people feel connected, valued and supported while reducing isolation, improving resilience and encouraging healthier lifestyles.
Rather than offering a one-size-fits-all solution, the Foundation works closely with local partners to ensure individuals can access the right support, at the right time, in the right place.
When sport becomes a lifeline
The impact of the Foundation’s work can perhaps be seen most clearly through Fighting Fit, a specialist programme supporting people affected by cancer.
For participants, the benefits often extend far beyond physical fitness.
One participant described the programme as transformative during and after cancer treatment:
“Fighting Fit sessions have been so helpful to me in many ways. The fitness side of things is an obvious start, and being active during and after cancer treatment has helped me to manage my treatment side effects.”
But it was the emotional support that left the deepest impression.
“Getting a cancer diagnosis is mind blowingly traumatic. What I’ve got from the group sessions is camaraderie, people to talk to who ‘get it’ and don’t hit you with platitudes. If you’re having a bad day, they’re supportive and kind.”
The participant also spoke about the confidence and friendships gained through the programme, helping them achieve something they once thought impossible.
“I walked the Lincoln 10K this year for the Foundation. Previously I’d only managed to walk 5k and took a long time to recover. To have completed the 10k is an achievement I’ll never forget, and I know I couldn’t have done that without the help of Fighting Fit.”
Stories like this highlight how physical activity can become a pathway to improved mental wellbeing, stronger social connections and renewed confidence during some of life’s most challenging moments.
Building stronger communities
Alongside health programmes, the Foundation delivers initiatives that tackle loneliness and social isolation, support educational achievement, improve employability and encourage community participation.
Its Extra Time Hub, for example, helps older adults stay active and connected through activities including walking football, seated exercise sessions and social groups. Participants regularly report increased confidence, improved wellbeing and stronger social networks.
The wider impact reaches beyond individuals. Families, friendship groups and communities all benefit when people feel healthier, more connected and more confident in themselves.
By creating opportunities for people to come together, learn new skills and support one another, the Foundation continues to strengthen the social fabric of communities across Lincolnshire.
Looking ahead
Lincoln City Foundation is currently embedding its new five-year strategy, with ambitions to grow its reach and deepen its impact across the county.
The organisation remains committed to finding innovative ways to address community need while building on the partnerships that have helped it become one of Lincolnshire’s leading community charities.
As demand for preventative, community-based support continues to grow, the Foundation is well positioned to demonstrate how sport can be used as a catalyst for positive social change.
