The founding of the NHS 75 years ago was a huge milestone in our national history. It was born out of hope, and for millions of people it represented the chance of a healthier future for them and their families. But as a new national service it faced real challenges. Chief among them was building a workforce capable of meeting the needs of a population suffering the effects of war, poverty and diseases as yet untamed by science, including tuberculosis. Fast forward to 2023: the NHS in England now has many times the number of staff, including doctors, nurses, therapists and scientists, and is therefore capable of delivering a far greater volume and breadth of care. But, at the same time, local services report vacancies totalling over 112,000. This is a reflection of how the needs of our population have grown and changed, thanks in large part to the role better care and advances in medicine have played in increasing life-expectancy by 13 years since 1948. That change will continue; the number of people aged over 85 is estimated to grow 55% by 2037, as part of a continuing trend of population growth which outstrips comparable countries. Inaction in the face of demographic change is forecast to leave us with a shortfall of between 260,000 and 360,000 staff by 2036/37. The lack of a sufficient workforce, in number and mix of skills, is already impacting patient experience, service capacity and productivity, and constrains our ability to transform the way we look after our patients. A growing shortfall would mean growing challenges and lost opportunities. If the NHS is to continue to be the health service the public overwhelmingly wants and are proud of – one which provides high quality care for patients, free at the point of need – it needs a robust and effective plan to ensure we have the right number of people, with the right skills and support in place to be able to deliver the kind of care people need The publication of our NHS Long Term Workforce Plan is therefore one of the most seminal moments in our 75-year history. This is the first time the government has asked the NHS to come up with a comprehensive workforce plan; a once-in-a-generation opportunity to put staffing on a sustainable footing and improve patient care. We have grasped that opportunity. Our Plan is ambitious, and it is bold, while being rooted in the reality experienced by patients and staff now, and it is rigorously aligned to the improvements in care that we aspire to make for patients. Even more crucially, it doesn’t just herald the start of the biggest recruitment drive in health service history, but also of an ongoing programme of strategic workforce planning – something which is unique amongst other health care systems with national scale.

It with a great deal of excitement and pleasure that I write to inform you that Age UK Lincoln & South Lincolnshire (AUKLSL), in partnership with Lincs Independent Living Partnership (LILP) a consortium consisting of AUKLSL, St Barnabas Hospice, Lace Housing Association and LHP, are delighted to announce the launch of our brand new service, I Forget.  A service designed and co-produced with people that are living with dementia and their carers for, not only those diagnosed with dementia but also for anyone who is experiencing memory loss.

Having listened to what it is that people living with dementia and their carers have told us they would find useful, we have developed a service, funded from our own resources, to provide the following initially:

• Information Hub
• Education
• Case Management
• Social Activities and Inclusion
• Advance Care Planning
• Crisis Avoidance
• Support before and after diagnosis

The above is not an exhaustive list, the service will grow and develop as we learn from those accessing it, be that people with memory loss or dementia, their friends and family or system partners from across our ICS.

We will open to referrals on Monday 3^rd July and the service will operate Monday-Friday between 08:45-4pm each day.  Attached are documents that provide further information and details of how to make a referral.

We will be working with system partners from across the ICS but are very pleased to be working closely with LPFT colleagues Steve Roberts, Associate Director of Operations – Older People & Frailty Divisionand SRO for dementia and Gina Thompson, Dementia Transformation Programme Lead, to ensure a really smooth interface between our service and theirs, in order to provide a ‘no wrong door’ approach to this area of work and support the pressures within our service areas, aiming for people to receive the right level of support when they need it.

We will be officially launching the service later in the year where we plan to share our early findings and raise further awareness about the service, its impact and the learning we will no doubt have by then, so watch your inboxes for a save the date coming out soon. Every-One is very excited to announce they have received funding from Shine/Lincolnshire County Council Innovation fund to support a new innovative project to support peri-menopause and menopause.  The programme is being delivered over 6 weekly sessions and is starting on Thursday, 6th July in the evening with other cohorts starting in September and November, primarily being delivered primarily in the North Kesteven region as a pilot.  It will be looking at symptoms, health and wellbeing, mental health, holistic support, and medications.  Supported by various health professionals and partners, we are hoping that this will be catalyst to further menopause support being widely available.

Only two weeks until Volunteer Management Workshops! Make sure you sign up!

Lincolnshire Community & Voluntary Service in partnership with Voluntary Centre Services and the Lincolnshire Volunteer Centres, have developed a series of Volunteer Management Workshops to help voluntary sector groups and charities improve their skills and knowledge in recruiting, supporting and valuing their volunteers

It consists of 3 workshops which will be delivered over 5 half day sessions virtually on Zoom and will cover the volunteer journey from preparing your group for volunteers, to recruiting and supporting your volunteers to saying goodbye.

We are delighted to share with you that our bookings for our HAF Summer holiday clubs can be made from Friday 30^th June!

What is HAF?

The HAF programme is a Government funded programme that provides reception to year 11 pupils, who receive benefits-related free school meals in Lincolnshire, access to free healthy meals and activities over the summer, Christmas and Easter holidays. Further eligibility criteria can be found on the HAF website for children who are not eligible for benefits-related free school meals.  The LA is able to utilise 15% funding to support other vulnerable children and young people.

Summer 2023 Delivery Dates

Summer HAF will take place during the summer holidays running from Monday 24^th July – Tuesday 5^th September 2023 (excluding weekends and bank holidays).

Locations

There are over 130 clubs being delivered across the county during the Summer holidays. Our new mapping tool on our HAF webpage highlights the HAF provision being delivered across the county which you are welcome to signpost your networks and eligible families to. More detailed information on HAF providers can be found on the booking system, including activity information, dates and times.

How to Book

To book on to a club families will require a HAF Evoucher code which are provided by schools. The HAF Evoucher, received by email and/or text message, will include a link that you can click that redirects you to the booking site. The booking site lists all Lincolnshire HAF clubs and you can narrow your search by postcode for the most local clubs to you. Attached is a Parent’s Guide to booking which you are welcome to circulate with eligible families you work with.

If you know of families and children that are eligible but have not received a HAF Evoucher from their school, please contact HAF@lincolnshire.gov.uk

Cancelling bookings

We kindly request, if children are unable to attend their booked places that bookings are cancelled as soon as possible so that another child can be offered the place. To cancel bookings, simply contact the club that the child is booked onto. Contact details can be located on the booking confirmation email or by clicking on the HAF Evoucher and cancelling the relevant days.

Providers can remove all future bookings if there is non-attendance of more than two consecutive days and we cannot guarantee that HAF Evouchers will be reimbursed if bookings are cancelled late.

Thank you for all your support in ensuring as many children and young people as possible can take advantage of the holiday clubs where they can access sports and games, enrichment opportunities, learn about healthy lifestyles and receive a hot healthy meal.

Women and Gambling-Related Harm

I have added some new dates for our online training if you or any of your team would like to book on. This training is still being well received by different types of organisations as we continue to raise awareness of how women are disproportionately affected by gambling related harms and how hidden these issues can be.

FREE Online Training: Women and Gambling-Related Harm

As you may already know, GamCare is a national provider of free information, advice and treatment for anyone affected by problem gambling. There’s estimated to be 350,000 problem gamblers in the UK, up to 20% of whom are women. For every person who has a problem with gambling, up to 10 other people can be affected, and women are disproportionately at risk of experiencing gambling-related harm. Gambling-related harm can include debt, relationship difficulties, housing issues, gender-based violence, health problems, depression and anxiety, feelings of isolation, and suicidality.

Our FREE training can be accessed online via Zoom. We offer a 2 hour session which individuals can register to attend at their convenience, using a mobile phone, tablet, or laptop. During the training session, we will explore what gambling is and how it turns from a fun pastime into something that is harmful as well as talking about gambling-related harm, risk factors, impacts, and how to recognise and support people affected.
