£600 million announced for social care winter workforce capacity boost

The Government has unveiled a £600 million package to help with recruitment and retention in social care. The fund will support the social care workforce and boost capacity, in turn supporting the NHS ahead of winter and through into next year.  This week, Helen Whately, Minister for Social Care, has written to local authorities and care providers about preparations for winter. Deborah Sturdy, Chief Nurse for Adult Social Care, has also welcomed the funding announcement and the winter call to action in her latest blog.

The GSK Health Inequalities programme is open to registered charities that are at least one year old, located and working in the UK, with a total annual income of between £20,000 and £150,000. Up to 15 charities will receive up to £10,000 in unrestricted funding and access to training and development valued at £2,700.

This is a great opportunity for smaller community based organisations to access unrestricted funding and leadership development support. The programme supports aspirational leaders who want to develop their organisations.

The 2024 GSK IMPACT Awards are open to registered charities that are at least three years old, working in a health-related field in the UK, with a total annual income between £150,000 and £3 million. Up to ten winners receive £40,000, in unrestricted funding with the overall winner receiving an additional £10,000. Up to five runners-up receive £4,000 in unrestricted funding.

The deadline for Stage 1 applications is Friday 1^st September

This funding is for organisations that support people and communities under severe pressure because of the increased cost of living.

By community we mean people living in the same local area.

Our main priority is to fund organisations supporting low-income households and individuals.

You can apply for between £10,000 and £75,000. If you need £10,000 or less you could try our National Lottery Awards for All fund.

To apply your organisation must already run critical services around at least one of the following:

• food and emergency supplies – like food and baby banks or the provision of hot meals, clothes or toiletries
• emergency shelter – like night shelters or other accommodation for people experiencing homelessness
• safe spaces – like domestic abuse services and youth services
• warmth – like warm rooms and spaces
• financial and housing advice – like giving people advice because of the increased cost of living.

Your organisation must also be facing both

• increased demand for these critical services

and

• increased costs of delivering these critical services

We’re more likely to fund small and medium-sized front-line organisations

With an annual turnover of between £10,000 and around £1 million.

Larger organisations can also apply if they do both of the following:

• show that they work closely and effectively with local communities
• fill a gap in essential local services.

You can get funding to pay for:

• costs of delivering, expanding or adapting your existing critical service(s) from the date you are funded until 31 March 2024. The date you are funded will be around 12 weeks from the time you submitted your application.
• retrospective costs of running the existing critical service(s) you’re applying for between 24 July 2023 and the date you are funded.

We want to support a range of critical services that reach as many local communities and groups of people as possible. This will be one of the things we think about when deciding which applications to fund.

Following the successful delivery of the Household Support Funding earlier this year, where the Foundation distributed £59,500.00 to almost 300 households, we will be providing more vital funds across Boston Borough, East Lindsey & South Holland. Grants of up to £300 will be given to individuals and families, who have not received any cost of living support across the 3 districts. Funding originates from UK Government via the South and East Lincolnshire Councils Partnership’s Household Support Scheme.

We recognise there are still many households across these areas who are finding themselves in financial hardship or just about managing, but do not qualify for any other benefit or income support. Support will be given predominantly in the form of vouchers for food, energy (no cash grants are given).

Form for people with dementia at risk of going missing

People with dementia can sometimes start to wander. This might only be into the garden or street for a short time, but sometimes people get lost and go missing.

Carers, family or friends of a vulnerable person, or the person themselves, can fill in a Herbert Protocol form in advance, containing information to help the police if the person goes missing.

Submitting a completed form means you don’t have to try to remember the information when you are under stress if someone goes missing. And it saves time, so we can start the search sooner.

When to fill in a form

Use your professional opinion as a carer or your knowledge as a family member to decide whether a person is at risk of going missing. For example, you might decide it is time to fill in a form when someone cannot remember their address themselves.

Who fills in the form

A carer at a care home, family, friends or the person themselves can fill in the form.

Please get permission from the person at risk or their relatives before you complete a form. If that isn’t possible, a care home can fill in a form if they think it is in the person’s best interests.

Filling in the form with the person can trigger memories that they like to talk about, and can enrich your time with them. Be mindful though that some memories might be upsetting.

What to do when someone goes missing

If you discover someone is missing, look for them around the house or home, including any gardens and outbuildings.

If you don’t find them, call 999 immediately.

If you’re deaf or hard of hearing, use our textphone service 18000 or text us on 999 if you’ve pre-registered with the emergencySMS service.

Don’t worry – you won’t be criticised for calling the police if you are worried about someone’s safety.

When you call us, say that you have already submitted a Herbert Protocol profile.

We will ask you extra questions about what has happened, including where and when the person was last seen and what they were wearing and carrying.

Smart wristbands

A “smart” wristband can be issued to people living with dementia. The wristband stores the name and contact details of a wearer’s next of kin so that if someone gets lost, police or members of the public can quickly access contact details by placing a mobile phone against the device. Please note, the wristband is not a tracker.

If you’re a carer or relative of someone who is living with dementia you can request a wristband when you complete the Herbert Protocol form.

Lincolnshire Community Foundation to support Ukrainian refugees in Greater Lincolnshire.

Staff and Trustees at Lincolnshire Community Foundation are delighted to announce a new partnership with Cranswick, one of the UK’s leading food producers. This partnership sees the launch of the Cranswick Charitable Trust Ukraine Fund thanks to funding being made immediately available.

Recognising the impact Lincolnshire Community Foundation had previously delivered in helping Ukrainians in the County, Cranswick plc approached the Foundation to distribute funds across Greater Lincolnshire to Ukrainian families and individuals who have had to flee their homes following the devastating war with Russia enabling them to rebuild their lives and integrate into our communities.

Refugees who have been here for some months may need support as they transition from living with a host to moving into their own home to live independently. At the same time, refugees who continue to arrive may need support to help them settle into their new environment. Any refugee fleeing their homeland in Ukraine can apply to the fund for financial support.  Grants are available up to £150 for individuals and up to £300 for families, although these are not cash grants.  Where an applicant is successful, Foundation staff will source the item(s) and arrange for delivery from the supplier. Funding may include electrical appliances for new homes or being able to cook homely dishes, to bicycles (including helmet, hi-vis vest and light) to enable independence in commuting to home and school.

The scheme is now open and will be run as part of a rolling programme until funds have been distributed. The Foundation team are on hand to offer support at every stage.

“Our team have already been able to offer support to 277 refugees and their families and welcome the opportunity to extend this to new arrivals as they continue to flee adversity in their home country.  Some Ukrainian refugees now have confidence to make the move into their own homes, but often lack basic living essentials which is where this fund may well be able to step in and help. We thank Cranswick Charitable Trust for their generous donation, and we look forward to working with them on this scheme. ”.

“We are pleased to be able to help create the “Ukrainian refugees in Lincolnshire” fund and provide support and aid for those families and individuals who have been displaced as a result of the ongoing conflict between Ukraine and Russia.  A number of our colleagues are Ukrainian, and still have family and friends in the country and we are keen to help out where we can.  We are pleased to be working with the Lincolnshire Community Foundation to ensure the support and donations go to those most in need of the funds.”
